One Nation Under God

The events of the past week have left the entire nation reeling and shaken to its core. Almost one week later and many are still dazed by the shock and dismay. At a time like this we need to go back to the roots of our belief system for the kind of stability and assurance needed to carry us through this most difficult of times. Proverbs 23 suggests "remove not the old landmarks" That is to say we need to revisit the old landmarks as a Source of Guidance and direction. Those landmarks are summed up as The Three Great Principles and they are:

  1. God exists and He is Good. He is the Great Life Giver who lives within us and without us, is undying and eternally beneficent. He is not heard, nor seen, nor touched, yet is perceived by the person who desires perception.
  2. Man is immortal, and his future is one whose glory and splendor have no limit.
  3. A Divine Law of Absolute Justice rules the World.

Bishop Charles W. Leadbeater said in his little book "Outline of Theosophy", from the first Great Truth it follows "That in spite of appearances all things are definitely and intelligently moving together for good; that all circumstances however untoward they seem, are in reality exactly what are needed, that everything around us tends, not to hinder us, but to help us, if it is only understood."

Later in the same book he says "Perhaps none of our postulates will present greater difficulty to the average mind that the first corollary to this first great Truth. Looking around us in daily life we see so much of the storm and stress, the sorrow and the suffering, so much that looks like the triumph of evil over good, that it seems almost impossible to suppose that all this apparent confusion is in reality part of an ordered progress." Yet this is the Truth, and can be seen to be the Truth so soon as we escape from the dust-cloud raised by the struggle in this outer World, and look upon it from the vantage ground of the fuller knowledge and the inner peace.

The Third Great Truth is that Perfect Justice is meted out to all. And so in whatever circumstances an individual or a nation, for that matter, finds himself or herself, that nation or individual has provided. But more that this, we can rest assured that under the action of evolutionary law, matters are so arranged as to give the best possible opportunity for developing within that individual, group or nation those qualities which are most needed.

We may be presented with all sorts of difficulties but these are offered only in order that we may learn to surmount them and thereby develop within ourselves courage, determination, patience, perseverance, and compassion. I have faith that we shall preserve, we shall overcome and we shall triumph. Ours is to cooperate with the Grand Scheme and the Good Law.

On Tuesday after the terrible occurrences of the day I wrote to the clergy of the Province the following:

One Nation Under God

Throughout this day of intense tragedy and human suffering we have been subjected, by the media, to the continual recounting of events of such horror and terror as to impress these images almost indelibly in our consciousness. Along with the imprint of these images comes the resultant emotional response of fear, apprehension, and anxiety and accompanying feelings of anger, rage and hostility, even when an object of that anger is not available or obvious.

As Liberal Catholic Christians our mission is the establishment of the Kingdom. Therefore in a time of crisis such as this it behooves us to remind ourselves of that mission. By all means let level heads prevail. Let us not sink into the race consciousness but on the contrary return to the center which is our True Self and instead link to that higher Mind. "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." Phil 2:5

There is much talk about pay back retaliation and revenge. While the desire for justice and equilibrium is natural we know that in the grand scheme true Justice will prevail. In the meantime, as Christians, ours is the call to bring Light into a dark world. Christ speaks from Eternity and says "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth will draw all men unto me. John 12:32. Let us pray and meditate in order to become "Helpers" in the Great Work. Let us lift Him up in our hearts and minds and our lives and let peace prevail.

The media on every screen says "America under Attack" Let us instead say "One nation under God"
